FUMC Vol. 11, No. 16
YOUTH GARAGE SALE We are kicking off our fundraising efforts for our 2003 Summer Mission Trip by holding a garage sale. We welcome shoppers and donations for our garage sale! If needed, we will pick items up. Please contact Anne Hof, Youth Director, at the Church, 237-3158. The sale will be held at Anne Hof’s home at 1304 East 42ND Street (Corner of Avenue N & 42nd Street) on Friday, August 16TH from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, August 17TH from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mark your calendars! We will worship in Harmon Park on Sunday, September 8th at 10:30 a.m. Lunch (free will offering) will be served at Noon following the service. The Family Life Council will have games for the entire family beginning at 1:00 p.m., with ice cream served at 2:00 p.m! There will be an 8:30 service at the Church that day only. The 9:45 and 11:00 services will be combined at the park. Rev. William M. Williams, Jr., our District Superintendent, will speak at the 8:30 and 10:30 services that day. The Praise Bands and Chancel Choir will provide music and the "Serious Fun" puppeteers will perform also. Worship in the Park will commemorate the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Military personnel, along with Fire Department personnel and local Law Enforcement personnel (past and present) will be honored during the service. Please call the church office at 237-3158 with the name of any active military persons from this congregation so that we may honor them. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ PLEASE HELP US! "No one from the Church came to see me in the hospital. They must not care". Of course we care! One of our pastors, Rev. Dr. Marvin Koelling or Rev. Ron Harris, and parish visitor, Winona Whitney, visit the hospital every day to check on members and friends of First Church. They check at the front desk to see who is listed as "Methodist", then they make their rounds, visiting everyone on their list. However, sometimes names are not on the list. They have no way of knowing that someone is in the hospital unless they have been told. Please help us help you! If you are admitted to the hospital for any reason, please let the staff at the hospital know that they need to call us. If no one has come to see you within 24 hours, please tell them again. The secretarial staff reads the newspaper everyday to check for births, baby names, deaths and newsworthy items about our members. We find out a lot of information this way, but we don’t find out everything we sometimes need to know. With lawsuits about privacy issues becoming more prevalent, hospitals are becoming more hesitant about giving out any information. We need your help! If you need a minister to visit you, please call us at 237-3158 or have a family member or friend call for you. Thank you!

Look What The Education Committee Has Been Doing! We had two excellent sessions of VBS this Summer, with between 120-130 children. The Health and Wellness Committee gave us a safety tip each day, we made and ate bug-related snacks, learned some rousing songs, enjoyed games and sports, saw Bible re-enactments, watched a video, and best of all, we learned more about God’s love while we were having fun. Promotion Sunday will be celebrated on August 18th, at the 9:45 service. Attendance awards will be presented and 3rd Grade Bibles will be given to those going into 3rd Grade this year. 3rd Graders not present on August 18th will receive their Bibles on the following Sunday, August 25th. Gina Crosby said she would round up fabric and a willing group to make Bible covers. Stand by for her phone call! For the upcoming semester, we need: · More Sunday SchoolTeachers · A teacher for the Challengers Class to teach with Virginia Britton· Extra music teachers· Someone with leadership skills to lead TLC, the Wednesday afternoon program for children from Kindergarten through 5th Grade· Youth/adults to help the Puppeteers with stage management, lighting, etc.
Gina Crosby and Connie Kniep have come up with a format for our Christmas Celebration!! Details to follow.

Family Friends Neighbors Co-workers DIVORCE
Someone You Know Is Hurting DIVORCECARE SESSION TO BEGIN It’s hard to know how to help someone who is going through a divorce. It takes a long time and a lot of work to heal the pain that comes with the breakup of a marriage. DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group just for people who are separated or divorced. If you know someone going through a divorce, make sure they know about DivorceCare. It might just be the best thing you could do to help. A new session of DivorceCare will begin on Monday, September 9, 2002. The group meets in the Seekers Room of First United Methodist Church, 4500 Linden Drive from 7:00-8:30 p.m. every Monday evening for 13 weeks. Charge for the class is $15.00. Free Child Care is provided. For more information, please call Ken and Mary George at 237-1956.
Food Pantry items for the Jubilee Center may be brought at any time and placed in the shopping cart in Fellowship Hall. Please bring non-perishable food items or paper items, such as tissues, toilet paper, or women’s sanitary items, as these items cannot be purchased with food stamps. THANK YOU!!

Thank you to our radio sponsors for their generosity this year! We have all the sponsors needed for 2002! We do not know what the price for next year’s broadcast will be, but we already have several dates that have been spoken for. Look ahead on your 2003 calendar. Is there a special event, such as an anniversary or birthday that you would like to recognize? If so, please call Sharron Altmaier at 234-2163 to save your spot on 2003 list. We have no way of knowing how many people we reach each Sunday, but we have heard from many people who listen to the radio each Sunday because they are unable to attend worship services. This is a wonderful ministry, especially to those people who are homebound for one reason or another. If you listen to the radio regularly and would like a bulletin mailed to you, please call the Church office. |
