Christmas Classics for Kids in the Church Library

 

The following four books are published by well know religious publisher Tommy Nelson.  The first three books have a Cd with them:

Twelve dogs of Christmas by Emma Kragen is an adaptation of the traditional English fold song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” featuring an increasing number of different kinds of dogs instead of the usual gifts.

Jingle cats by Michael McDermott is a variation of “Jingle Bells,” two siblings are delighted by the cats they receive on Christmas Day.

12 Bugs of Christmas by Troy Schmidt is based on the characters from Max Lucado’s Hermie, A Common Caterpillar.  On each of the twelve days of Christmas, more and more bugs arrive to celebrate the holiday.

10 Minutes to Showtime! By Tricia Goyer is the story of a group of angels behind a curtain in the sky  preparing for a big debut over the manger in Bethlehem. 

Clement Moore’s well known poem The Night Before Christmas has been reissued in a classic ed. with wonderful illustrations. 

Ruth Bell Graham has written One Wintry Night: the Christmas Story, which tells of a young mountain boy caught alone in a sudden snowstorm.  He takes shelter in a cabin.  While they are snowbound, the woman living there tells the Christmas story--beginning with creation and closing with Christ’s resurrection

The Pine Tree Parable by Liz Higgs.  This story is about a farmer and his wife, who grow trees to sell for Christmas.  They give their prized perfect tree to a poor family who cannot afford to pay for it.

Max Lucado’s story The Crippled Lamb is about a lamb who has always felt different and sad because of his black spots and his limp.  He feels his true worth when he is called upon to help keep the baby Jesus warm.  Another Max Lucado book is Alabaster’s Song.  On Christmas Eve, a six-year-old boy listens to the angel, a gap-toothed cherub, from the top of the family tree sing just as he did on the first Christmas night.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is the story of a magical train ride on Christmas Eve that takes a boy to the North Pole to receive a special gift from Santa Claus.

Santa’s Favorite Story is written by Hisako Aoki and Ivan Gantschev.  The forest animals become worried that there won’t be a Christmas because Santa might not be able to deliver all of the heavy packages.  To help everyone understand that Christmas would come even if he didn’t Santa tells the story of the first Christmas, and the animals learn about the true meaning of the day.

Dan Carr has written Our Savior Is Born, a story of the first Christmas.  A meaningful poem tells the story of the birth of Jesus in a unique and memorable way.

The Christmas Crib that Zack Built is written by Carol Wedeven and relates the birth of Jesus using the pattern of the traditional verse “This Is the House That Jack Built”.

Why Christmas Trees Aren’t Perfect is by Dick Schneider.  Small Pine is a tree in the forest whose shape has become imperfect through providing shelter to the animals, in spite of this the tree is selected to be the Christmas tree in a castle, shows that living for others make us beautiful in the eyes of God.

Katherine Zwers and John Tobin are authors of A Star In The Pasture.  Here is the timeless message of Christmas with a new twist, a look at heaven from the vantage point of a star—a fallen star.

The Littlest Angel by Charles Tazewell.  An earth-sick little angel newly arrived in heaven finds his recent transition from boy to cherub a difficult one.

The Last Straw written by Paula Palangi

The Legend of the Christmas Tree written by Rick Osborne is a story of the Johnson family’s visit to a tree lot.  There they find three beautiful trees.  One of the trees has a mysterious silver box under one of them.  What the lot owner tells the family brings meaning to their Christmas celebration.
